As the deadly pandemic is infecting lives from all over the world, the number of the death toll are seemingly increasing day by day. While the highly contagious coronavirus still remains without a cure, health experts are stressing on precaution to curb its effect. The public must follow social distancing to reduce the spread of the Covid-19. Most of the countries are under lockdown, roads are empty, religious places are shut and offices being closed, one must limit their personal interaction and stay indoors. However, amidst the crisis, only some people are taking this pandemic seriously. By now you must have seen videos of people in groups getting on the streets as being trolled and circulated on the internet. While some people are busy turning this serious issue into a wacky celebration, others are simply ignorant of the infection. Le sigh!
If you are surrounded by such friends or family who won’t just realise the seriousness of the situation or simply won’t adhere to social distancing guidelines, then you must speak with them to change their minds. It might be a task but remember, their well-being effect yours hence, you must do this.
In most cases, we have seen usually it is the older parents who decide to not pay attention to health advice. However, older and ailing parents are the ones who are at risk of being easily affected by the virus. According to Anna Yam, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist from California, it is not impossible to ask them to change their behaviour. She recommends finding out what’s motivating your loved one’s choice to not practice social distancing.
“ The key to a productive conversation intended to change the views and behaviours of someone else is respect. In this context, it can be seeing the other person as rational and well-intentioned, even if you disagree with their views or behaviours,” said Anna on a Byrdie report.
Another therapist suggests sharing your concerns about your loved ones with them and how it can affect other lives around them. You must explain why you are worried without hurting their feelings. Refrain from turning this topic into a debate or making it sound like a lecture.
Alongside this, you must also prepare yourself for rejection from your loved ones. They might not want to consider your views in the first attempt. Remember, patience is the key!
