For the longest time, we've been told that drinking detox teas can have an extremely positive effect on the body. And while that does hold true in certain aspects, there are also negative effects of drinking detox teas. It's like the saying goes, 'Too much of anything can be bad for you'. "Detox teas can trigger a laxative effect. Many herbs that are part of such detox teas can lead to serious issues. Actually, all natural substances can have potential side effects, especially if they’re overused,” says Hetal Chheda, a holistic nutritionist.
Here are a few more drawbacks that you should know about.
- Not all detox teas are the same so you won't know what's actually in them.
- Some teas contain laxatives and must only be used for short periods of time. However, they've been recommended to be used for weeks at a stretch which can ultimately lead to health issues.
- Some laxatives in these teas can interact with and stop the effects of other medications and this is extremely dangerous.
- The laxatives tend to make your gut lazy so you'll ultimately end up becoming dependant on them.
- Drinking detox tea has also been associated with interference with contraception, affecting the sleep cycle as well as not letting the body absorb all the nutrients and vitamins it gets from food.
Well, this only proves that it is always best to consume things in moderation. And if that still doesn't work out for you, you should go see your doctor. Stay tuned for more updates.
