Singer Sonu Nigam is currently courting controversy after his tweets regarding being forcefully woken up azaan every day. Disgruntled Sonu Nigam on the early hours of Monday morning took to Twitter to express his opinion over the fact that he has to daily wake up to sound of azaan from a mosque near his house. Terming the morning azaan routine as 'forced religiousness' and 'gundagiri', the singer further questioned, "Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?"
No sooner did the 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' singer tweet this, he faced severe backlash and trolling on the social media. In fact, many users criticised the singer for bringing up an issue as sensitive as religion. Clarifying his stand on the issue, Sonu Nigam tweeted:
While the singer has maintained that his tweets were just not about Islamic practice of azaan but against the use of loudspeakers during various religious events and festivals that further add on to the noise pollution. However, Sonu's remarks did not sit too well with a senior member of a minority council, who has issued a fatwa against the singer.
Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, vice president, West Bengal Minority United Council said, "If anyone can shave his hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country I personally announce an award of Rs 10 lakh for that person."
Considering the amount of backlash that the singer has received over his tweets, reports suggest that the singer's security has been beefed up by the Mumbai Police. According to reports, the Mumbai Police has deployed security outside his Versova bungalow, Namah.
Replying to Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi Sonu tweeted:
The 'Abhi Mujhme Kahin' singer has announced that he will be holding a press conference today to talk about the controversy.
