Study states that vegetarians have a lower self-esteem compared to non-vegetarians
According to a study, people who cut meat from their diet harbour more negative feelings, have low self-esteem and see less meaning in life
Alisha Alam | Nov 4, 2018, 14:24 ISTVegetarians, we have some shocking news for you. A new study has found that vegetarians might be more miserable than meat-eaters. Sure, vegetarians might be healthier than meat eaters but they're also more prone to sadness. According to a study, people who cut meat from their diet harbour more negative feelings, have low self-esteem and see less meaning in life.
Around 400 vegetarians, meat-eaters and ‘semi-vegetarians’ were asked to record their feelings over a fortnight. It was then found that vegetarians experienced the most negative feelings and enjoyed social occasions the least. Lead author Dr John Nezlek, from the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan, Poland, says that sometimes vegetarians are purposely excluded from social events or made to feel weird simply because they're vegetarians.
He also said that over time, such comments begin to take a toll on a person's well-being. A survey even analysed vegetarians and meat-eaters’ self-esteem based on certain factors and found that vegetarians scored 4.62 for self-respect while meat-eaters scored 5.33 which proves that vegetarians were more likely to be depressed. Vegetarians may also suffer because they are often seen as morally superior by meat eaters. Stay tuned for more updates.
