A lot of people these days are opting for tea as a healthier option when it comes to consuming beverages. On an average, people are now choosing to consume tea as compared to other beverages like coffee, sodas and other fizzy drinks. Now, as an avid tea drinker, before you get on that high horse of yours you need to ask yourself one very important question. Is tea really as healthy as we think it is? According to naturopath Lisa Guy, what type of tea you consume and how you consume it also matters.
“When you brew black, green or white tea using boiling water and steep it for too long, tannins are released which not only gives it a bitter taste, but can cause digestive issues in sensitive people if drinking large quantities. So for these people, herbal teas are probably a better option as they don’t contain tannins,” Ms. Guy says. A tea plant called ‘camellia sinensis’ absorbs pesticides easily so there's a good chance that when you pour hot water on these, you'll end up releasing harmful toxins in your body.
“Drinking tea with mindfulness will also help you to feel more calm and relaxed, and will allow you to reconnect with yourself, your body and those around you,” Ms. Guy says.
