Alisha Alam | Jul 26, 2018, 17:37 ISTHaldi or turmeric has quite a few health benefits as everyone is already aware of. But now, a recent study has found that a derivative of turmeric, when added to eye drops, can help cure early stages of glaucoma. Researchers from the Imperial College London and University College London in the UK found that extracted from the yellow spice turmeric when directly delivered to the back of the eye using eye drops can overcoming the challenge of curcumin’s poor solubility. Glaucoma affects over 60 million people worldwide and results in irreversible blindness in at least 1 in 10 cases. Which is why finding an early cure for the disease may prove to be quite valuable.
“Curcumin is an exciting compound that has shown promise at detecting and treating the neurodegeneration implicated in numerous eye and brain conditions from glaucoma to Alzheimer’s disease, so being able to administer it easily in eye drops may end up helping millions of people,” said Francesca Cordeiro, a professor at UCL.
Well, it certainly looks like turmeric has once again proved that it's a miracle spice for us all. Stay tuned for more updates.
