Yesterday was a historic moment for the constitution of India. The Supreme Court officially scraped the age old Islamic practice of Triple Talaq. It was a practice through which a person could get an instant divorce and it had been around for many centuries now. While countless people have been victim to it, not many people know that yesteryears actress Meena Kumari was also one of them.
Often touted as the ‘tragedy queen’ of Bollywood, Meena Kumari had tied the know with filmmaker Kamal Amrohi by Islamic rituals. However, soon after they began to have trouble in the marriage and one fine day Kamal shouted 'talaq' three times in a fit of rage and it resulted in the dissolution of their marriage. Heart-broken, Meena Kumari slipped into depression due to the incident.
However, Kamal soon realised his mistake and wanted to remarry Meena Kumari. However, another Islamic practice called Halala states that a divorcee can re-marry her ex-husband only if she has been married to someone else after him. Kamal thus requested his friend Amaan Ullah Khan, Zeenat Aman's father, to marry Meena Kumari.
Meena Kumari then married Amaan and after a month of their marriage, Amaan divorced her and then she could marry Kamal Amrohi again. Reportedly, Meena Kumari has even expressed the pain that she had to go through because of this practice in a heartfelt poem.
