Anil Kapoor won the National Film Award for the Best Actor for his performance in 'Pukar'. It was in the same year that Raveena Tandon won the Best Actress Award for 'Daman' following which an ugly controversy kicked up with jury members alleging interference by a "cynical political cartel" and had turned the whole affair "into a farce".
