How many times has your mother told you not to sleep with that phone lying around on your bed? And how many times have you brushed her off saying she has no clue what she's talking about? Well, seems like she's been right all along. In a recent study, a group of researchers found that sleeping with your phone in or near your bed could increase the risks of getting brain cancer.
Phones emit radio frequency energy that could increase your risks of getting cancer, tumours of the acoustic nerve and salivary glands. Radio frequency energy has also been linked to lower sperm counts and less mobile sperm. Researchers haven't yet revealed any definitive health effects of using mobile phones but they have now stressed upon the fact that it is definitely harmful to sleep with your phone near you.
The London Department of Health said, "When a phone sends signals to a tower, the radio frequency energy goes from the phone's antenna out in all directions, including into the head and body of the person using the phone. Cell phones work by sending and receiving signals to and from cell phone towers. Don't sleep with your phone in your bed or near your head."
People could also reduce the risks of cancer by carrying their phones in their bags instead of pockets and by not using their phone when it has only two bars of signal. When the signal is weak, the phone sends out more radio frequency energy to boost its connection to signal towers. Using wireless headsets could lower the risk of cancer, as they emit much less energy than mobile phones.
