Almost as soon as the Monsoons have hit the city, people have begun to reel under ailments caused by the season. It is a given that vector-borne diseases spread immensely during this season. And now it looks like the damage has already been done. As per reports from the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) health department, there have been 356 confirmed cases of malaria, 21 of dengue, 94 of hepatitis, and five of leptospirosis. Apart from this, more than 297 cases of dengue-like illness have also emerged.
Dr. Padmaja Keskar who happens to be a health officer in the BMC stated, “Mosquito-borne diseases are common in the monsoon and to prevent leptospirosis we urge people not to venture into puddles, muddy grounds or water ponds formed due to incessant rains. Rodents are responsible for leptospirosis infection.” She added, “Due to storage of dirty, stagnant water and garbage there has been growth in the number of mosquitoes, giving rise to diseases.” It is of extreme importance that the public should take the necessary precautions.
Avoid contact with water or contaminated soil. People who come in contact with contaminated things such as vegetables and animals should be extra careful. Keep your surroundings clean and keep your pets in a clean condition. If symptoms like high fever, headache, myalgia, redness of eyes occur seek medical advice immediately.
