For many women, that time of the month can cause excruciating pain and muscle cramps. One study claimed it can cause as much pain as a heart attack. However, soon there just might be a way for all women to avoid period pain, especially for those who use tampons.
Foria, a cannabis and hemp company based in the US, has developed a “cannabis vaginal suppositories” to help offer relief from these symptoms. They have designed tampons that contains two main active cannabinoid compounds found in marijuana - 60mg THC and 10mg CBD.
The company claims it helps to relax the nerves and muscles, and offer relief from the pain. It also works to help the body release happy chemicals in the brain. According to the company's website, these tampons are "formulated for relief from menstrual & pelvic discomfort, Foria Relief delivers the soothing benefits of full-spectrum cannabis directly to the area that needs it most — typically with little or no psychoactive effects."
The cost of Foria Relief is about $44 for a four-pack. It is made with cocoa butter, distilled THC oil and CBD isolate and organic hemp. Independent tests reportedly show the tampons laced with cannabis are free of toxins, microbes, pesticides and heavy metals. Currently, this product is only available in the United States. People with a medical marijuana card or a physician’s recommendation letter are the only ones who can purchase it.
Meanwhile, many women have given positive reviews about this product. One claimed her period cramps vanished in 20 minutes. "I was able to prevent the worsening pain and cramping and piercing pains in my vaginal canal," a news portal quoted an online reviewer saying about the product.
While using cannabis to treat this type of issue may be controversial, Foria affirms their intention is simple. "Cannabis has a long, cross-cultural history of use as a natural aide in easing symptoms associated with menstruation,” Foria states on their website. Adding, “Our intention is to share the powerful medicinal properties of this plant while utilising modern extraction techniques to standardise purity and potency, thereby ensuring a safe and accessible experience for all women.”
