Everyone knows the importance of good oral hygiene. You probably think if your teeth are pearly white and breath is fresh that you have nothing to worry about. While you might be right, you could also be overlooking some vital signal that could be important information about your health. "Research has shown that there is an association between oral problems and serious health conditions in the rest of your body," Sally Cram, D.D.S., a periodontist based in Washington, D.C, told a news portal. So before you brush your teeth, take a moment to do a check to know if you may have the following health issues. Here's what your mouth can reveal about your health.
02/8Red mouth, fat tongue
If the sides of your mouth are red then it probably indicates that you have a Vitamin B6 deficiency. And if your tongue is visibly swollen or appears rather fat then you could even have an iron deficiency. Similarly, if your tongue appears pale, you could be anaemic.
03/8Bad breath
“A small bacterial overgrowth in a patient’s stomach can show up as bad breath and not be associated at all with teeth,” says an expert. So, even though you may be brushing and flossing regularly, there might be some issues with your stomach that might be causing the bad breath to occur.
04/8Flat, worn teeth & headaches
If you've noticed that your teeth look flat and worn, plus you're getting awful headaches in the morning then it's possible that you're grinding your teeth due to stress. The worst part about this is that it can even cause problems in your neck muscles. Try to relieve your stress and anxiety and ask your dentist to help by making a mouth guard for you to wear.
05/8Tooth Pain
Slight pain in your teeth may not be a major cause for alarm. Whatever the issue is, it will be easy to treat. However, if you experience sharp pain when you chew, you need to get it checked asap. It could be a cavity. Experts recommend waiting it out for three days to see if the pain persists. If it doesn't stop, that means it's time to see a dentist. If you feel an ache in your top teeth it could be a sinus infection
06/8Bleeding Gums
When your gums start to bleed, that is something to pay serious attention to. "Contrary to what some people think, it is not normal for your gums to bleed," Lory Laughter, a registered dental hygienist in Napa, CA, told a news portal. This is when you need to step up your oral hygiene game or it could be that you have periodontal disease. "The harmful bacteria that's causing your gums to bleed can leave the mouth and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting your heart by inflaming your arteries," Steven Goldberg, D.D.S., a Boca Raton, FL-based dentist and inventor of DentalVibe. If the issue is not rectified it could cause more severe issues.
07/8Stained Teeth
"Most yellow or brownish stains are superficial, usually caused by drinking coffee, tea, soda, or red wine,"Sally Cram, D.D.S., a periodontist based in Washington, D.C, told a news portal. However, you should see a health expert if darker stains look permanent."Dark black or brown spots on a tooth can signal a cavity, while red or blue hues that appear suddenly could mean the tooth has cracked to the pulp, where the nerves and blood vessels are located," Cram explained. You could also develop celiac disease if you notice yellow or brown spots on the tooth's surface.
08/8Cracking teeth
Cracking teeth could be you are experiencing a mental health issue. "These problems are usually a sign of tooth grinding, which is caused by stress," Cram told a news portal. Adding, "Stress triggers muscle tension in your jaw, causing you to clench it closed at night." This could cause you to experience headaches or even cause damage to your jaw joint.
