Most men in their forties wake up one fine day to realise that the sporty mane they once had has begun to recede to their temples. But fear not men, for scientists are working hard to find a cure for baldness and a cure they have found! The Johns Hopkins University in the US has come up with an experimental drug which is said to reduce hair loss, hair whitening and skin inflammation; in mice.
Well, don't worry, they're working on a solution for humans too. The researchers found that hair loss in animals could be closely linked to a high-fat western diet. They noticed that both hair and skin became healthier when some fats called glycosphingolipids were inhibited from being produced.
“Our findings show that a Western diet causes hair loss, hair whitening and skin inflammation in mice, and we believe a similar process occurs in men who lose hair and experience hair whitening when they eat a diet high in fat and cholesterol,” said Subroto Chatterjee, one of the Johns Hopkins researchers working on the project.
“Further research is needed, but our findings show promise for someday using the drug we developed for skin diseases such as psoriasis, and wounds resulting from diabetes or plastic surgery,” said Chatterjee.
