Well, if you're one of those people who believe that drinking beer before wine can actually stop your hangover from occurring, we're sorry to burst your bubble but this is not true. While this happens to be quite a popular myth, it is just that, a myth. Researchers at Witten/Herdecke University in Germany and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom conducted studies which found that no matter what the sequence of your alcohol consumption is, you're bound to suffer in the same way the next day.
"Using white wine and lager beer, we didn’t find any truth in the idea that drinking beer before wine gives you a milder hangover than the other way around," said study first author Joran Kochling, of Witten/Herdecke University. "The only reliable way of predicting how miserable you’ll feel the next day is by how drunk you feel and whether you are sick," Kochling said.
The study was conducted on 90 people aged between 19 and 40 years. They were divided into three groups. One group was given 2.5 pints of beer followed by four large glasses of wine, the other was given the same amounts but in reverse order and the third drank either only beer or only wine in the same amounts. The next day participants received a hangover score based on certain factors like thirst, fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, stomach ache, increased heart rate and loss of appetite.
It was found that none of the groups had an advantage over the others. All the participants in all the groups suffered from hangovers regardless of what they drank. "Unpleasant as hangovers are, we should remember that they do have one important benefit, at least: They are a protective warning sign that will certainly have aided humans over the ages to change their future behavior. In other words, they can help us learn from our mistakes," said a researcher. Stay tuned for more updates.
