A visit from aunt flo. Shark week. Moon time. We have so many different names for the menstrual cycle of a woman. Think about it, do we still need names for our period? Gone are the days when talking about periods was considered a taboo. The scenario in India is equally improving. Talking about this natural process should not make anyone uncomfortable, let alone be it a woman. It is time that we educate ourselves with the correct menstrual hygiene products, and this doesn't only include sanitary pads. There’s a world of products that one woman can use during their monthly cycle. For starters, take a look at our list of alternatives that can be used instead of a sanitary napkin.

02/5Tampons
A tampon is the most common alternative to a sanitary pad. One has to insert the tampon in their vagina for it to soak up the blood. Once done, you can pull it off for disposal. It is hassle-free and can do the job for 4 to 6 hours, depending on the flow. A tampon provides better protection from any leakage than a sanitary pad. It is ideal for women who like to wear thongs over their period panties.

03/5Menstrual cups
A menstrual cup, made out of silicone is to be folded and inserted in your vigina to collect the blood. Not at all painful as you might think, it can last up to 12 hours. Once you take it out, make sure you sterilise it every time you use it. It is a reusable, eco-friendly and more practical than sanitary pad or tampon.

Little on the expensive side, it is a one-time investment. Period underwear is meant to soak up your blood without any sanitary pad. It keeps you dry for a long time. They are washable and reusable. Make sure you sterilise it by boiling carefully.

05/5Menstrual discs
Very similar to a menstrual cup, the menstrual disc provides protection for a longer period of time. It is to be placed slightly higher than where the menstrual cup is placed. It can give you protection for 12 hours. This is for one-time use and should be discarded immediately!
