Can junk foods add to the risk of children developing allergies?
While we already know that consuming too much junk food can have disastrous effects on our health, a new study has found that it can even up the risk of developing allergies in children
Alisha Alam | Jun 9, 2019, 12:56 ISTIt's no secret that in today's world most of us tend to consume a ton of junk food as opposed to food that's actually good for our health. And naturally, that means our kids eat the same food as well. While we already know that consuming too much junk food can have disastrous effects on our health, a new study has found that it can even up the risk of developing allergies in children.
As per research, foods that require microwaving or meats that are barbequed might be responsible for food allergies in children. High levels of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are associated with food allergies in kids says the study. And guess where AGEs are found in huge amounts? In junk foods! Their presence is so bad that it is known to play a role in the development and progression of different oxidative-based diseases such as neurological disorders, diabetes and whatnot.
61 children aged between 6 and 12 years were surveyed for the study. These kids were identified within three categories namely those with food allergies, those with respiratory allergies and healthy controls. The study was able to find a significant correlation between AGEs and allergies in children. Well, this goes to prove that healthy eating can go a long, long way. So, make sure that you feed your children the right kind of foods.
