When 'Mardaani' hit the theaters in 2014, the buzz for its compelling story was loud and all around. Rani’s portrayal of a dedicated police officer in the film was lauded for her true-to-life and intense performance. In the film, her character openly challenges her powerful opponent, the kingpin of child trafficking racket. Some even go to say, that it was her agonizing portrayal that lent the film its intensity and authenticity.
A hit among the critics, the film will now have a sequel as Rani’s character has climbed the hierarchical ladder to be appointed as a Superintendent of Police only to find herself caught in a vicious battle with a 21-year old merciless villain. Rani will be locked in a fast-paced game of cat and mouse with the villain who is extremely clever and knows no mercy or empathy. Although there is no confirmation from the filmmakers about the cast for the antagonist, reports claim Chunkey Panday’s nephew Ahaan Panday may feature as the antagonist in the film.
The shooting for the film began just yesterday in Mumbai where we managed to catch a glimpse of her just before she stepped into the sets.
Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film also marks to be the directorial debut of Gopi Puthran, writer of the first Mardaani film. Gopi also posted on his Instagram page a few days back to announce it. He shared a photo of the clapperboard from the sets and captioned it as, “To new beginnings. #mardaani2”
“Mardaani is and will always remain very close to my heart. Right since its release, everyone has asked me time and again when I would be doing Mardaani 2 and I am sure this announcement will come as a surprise to them. Gopi has written an extraordinary script that we all love and I cannot wait to start shooting the film,” Rani had said when Mardaani 2 was announced in December last year.
This will be Rani’s next release after her blockbuster Hichki. We can’t wait to see what’s in store in this intense cop-thriller. Stay tuned for more updates.
