Priyanka Chopra shifted to Mumbai post winning the Miss World crown in 2000 and nearly 17 years post her shifting with the entire family, her name was still present on the electoral rolls in Bareilly, her hometown in Uttar Pradesh, which was prepared for civic body elections by the administration. However, on Wednesday, the 8th of November, the civic administration finally decided to strike her name off the lists.
Assistant district election officer Abhijit Mukherji stated that they conduct a survey before any election to check for duplication of names of voters who have shifted elsewhere. He said, "It was a mistake on the part of the block-level officer concerned, who prepared the fresh electoral roll for this election. We will take action against those responsible for this error". He added, "The block electoral officer held an inquiry and reported that Priyanka Chopra and Madhu Chopra were listed as voters in Mumbai many years ago. They had left Bareilly in 2000". Polls do not allow a person to be listed in two places.
Meanwhile, Priyanka's old neighbours said that they were happy to know her name was still on the list and they would be writing to her to come and use her franchise. One Saurabh Saxena is contesting the election for councillor's post in the Bareilly Municipal Corporation from ward 56, under which Chopra's house falls. His brother Rajan Saxena said, "She was our neighbour here before shifting to Mumbai in 2000. Seeing her name on the voters' list was such a pleasant surprise. Since her family and she shifted to Mumbai, they have frequently visited Bareilly. However, the last time she herself visited was around four years ago".
Priyanka was listed as a voter in Ward No. 56 at serial No. 234 at the Junior High School, Jasauli booth, for the upcoming civic polls. And her mother Madhu was listed just before her daughter.
