11/12‘Taare Zameen Par’
Starring Darsheel Safary as a dyslexic boy and Aamir Khan as his art teacher, a beautiful story shows the misconceptions associated with Dyslexia. This film made many Indian parents sit up and take note of the eight-year-old boy, who is thought to be lazy and a shirker, but in reality, suffers from dyslexia. As a compulsive reaction, many parents did the rounds of shrinks to ascertain their own child’s slowcoach behavior that led to poor grades in school. Significantly, this film’s success, led to many behavioral disabilities becoming more visible on the big screen.
12/12‘Hichki’
'Hichki' is a film where Rani Mukerji plays a woman with a speech defect. Her character has been presented sensitively but, more importantly, realistically. The film is about Naina Mathur- a woman with Tourette syndrome who wants to be a teacher. Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder that causes involuntary movements and sounds. In Naina’s case, it is a tic that forces her to make an involuntary noise. However, this will not stop her from fighting against the school administration as they refuse to hire her. When they agree, she is asked to teach a class comprising economically underprivileged children, whom the school was forced to enroll as part of the RTI Act.
