"Quantity is relative, which is obvious in the case of an athlete whose sport may demand significant conditioning and practice, but who also knows how to cut back when made aware of negative consequences," Ralph Carson, PhD, senior clinical and research adviser for Eating Recovery Center in the US, told a news portal. Burnout and injury are often the consequences of an unhealthy relationship with exercise. Here are a few warning signs that will help you indicate if you have an unhealthy relationship with exercise.

02/5You focus too much on how many calories you burn
If you are looking to lose weight, then burning calories is important. However, there is more to it that that in order to lose weight healthily. "Purging can take the form of diuretics and laxatives, but also exercise, "Ralph Carson, PhD, senior clinical and research adviser for Eating Recovery Center in the US, told a news portal. Adding, "This is often called non-purging type bulimia," as in, an eating disorder. Seek professional help if this is a problem for you.

Are you pushing your body to extremes? It's a bad sign if you are working out when you need to rest especially if you are suffering from an injury. "Even elite athletes need to understand the importance of recovery and refuelling," Sarah Archer, adolescent program manager at the University of California San Diego Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Center, told a news portal. Adding, "You shouldn't be pushing through pain, blood or possible stress fractures."

If you feel guilty about skipping out on exercise even once, it could be a sign you may have a problem. "Missing a workout has almost a catastrophic quality," Sarah Archer, adolescent program manager at the University of California San Diego Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Center, told a news portal. Adding, "You worry that you'll immediately gain weight, lose muscle or fall out of your routine." While working out is important, make sure it is not harmful to your mental health and relationships with people.
