While there is so spoken and written about his films, there are very few things about the director that are public knowledge! 02/11Imtiaz Ali's rustic connect
Imtiaz Ali, who hails from Jamshedpur, as a child would sometimes accompany his father, who was in irrigation to the fields. Having spent a good time in the fields, Imtiaz at an early age developed good connect with heartlands of India, which is visible in his film.
03/11Imtiaz Ali wrote Highway 20 years back!
Imtiaz Ali had first met Alia Bhatt when she was 5 years old back then and was inspired to write the script. After a few years when Ali saw Alia’s screen test somewhere he decided to make the movie.
04/11Deepika Padukone was his first choice for 'Rockstar'!
Though an intense film, he Imtiaz believes that ‘Rockstar’ is “a defective film with many missing parts”. Imtiaz Ali always wanted to cast Deepika in ‘Rockstar’ but as the script progressed, he realised that many scenes in 'Rockstar' were similar to ‘Love Aaj Kal’, so he opted for Nargis in the end.
05/11Imtiaz began his career with TV!
Imtiaz began his career directing TV programs like ‘Kurukshetra’ and ‘Imtehaan’. Talking about his 'Imtehaan' experience he said, “It told me subconsciously that this was it. And I never thought of going back and doing anything else.”
06/11Imtiaz Ali took four years to make 'Socha Na Tha'
In 2005, Imtiaz made his directorial debut with ‘Socha Na Tha', which though a box office failure won him critical acclaim. Ali took 4 years to direct the film and during the process learnt about filmmaking and editing. It was then that he wrote 10 scripts, which later became films like ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Highway’ and ‘Rockstar’.
07/11Imtiaz Ali wanted to be a basketball player!
While Imtiaz Ali hated maths, the topic that he later explored in 'Tamasha', he had very varied interests. Imtiaz at the age of 18 wanted to be a basketball player, an author, a civil servant, an advertising copywriter or a management graduate.
08/11Imtiaz Ali does not believe in the institution of marriage!
After his divorce with Preety Ali, Imtiaz said, "Marriage is so artificial; it comes with so many dos and don’ts that not only make you claustrophobic but also mediocre. It reduces you to a ch***a version of yourself, you play roles to meet someone else’s expectations. Today, I say things as they are. I’m not hypocritical. I am as open-minded as when I was in school and college."
09/11Imtiaz Ali believes that 'Jab We Met' needs an overhaul
Imtiaz Ali's ‘Jab We Met’, which was one of the biggest successes of 2007 was not liked by the director himself! He had never anticipated its success. He said, "I don’t like the film anymore. The screenplay is very faulty at certain times. I don’t know a girl going into Decent Hotel will still not realise what she is talking about. In many places, I have not directed the actors very well and I especially feel that about Kareena. I know that it has been appreciated and it’s great that it has been appreciated. I would never say all this before the film was released, but almost everything in Jab We Met needs an overhaul."
