While ‘Shivaay’ was an action/thriller film with some cool action sequences ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ was a romantic drama which also marked the comeback of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to the big screen after a gap of seven years. Both the films managed to enter the 100 crore club but there can be only one victor.
04/11‘Kaabil’ and ‘Raees’
The box office clashes that took place earlier in 2017 were not so good. While the Shah Rukh Khan starrer was a bigger release, Hrithik's ‘Kaabil’ gave it the fight to remember. The Rahul Dholakia directorial earned more than 130 crores and just about got itself safe while ‘Kaabil’ on the other hand did quite well for itself. ‘Raees’ was one of the best performances of Shah Rukh Khan and for Hrithik as well playing a blind man wasn’t easy. Both the films had different plots. ‘Kaabil’ also starred Yami Gautam in a lead role and likewise in ‘Raees’ Mahira Khan played the lead role in the film.
05/11‘Don’ and ‘Jaan-e-Mann’
Salman Khan & Akshay Kumar vs Shah Rukh Khan. But script of ‘Jaan E Mann’ made sure that in reality there was no competition. Shah Rukh Khan’s film did well at the box-office, as Shah Rukh had portrayed a new kind of character on screen after working in romantic films. As Shah Rukh Khan is the king of romance and no one is quite able to match the superstar when it comes to romance. Both the films had different plots. ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ had Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Preity Zinta in lead roles.
06/11‘Lagaan’ and ‘Gadar’
One of the most memorable box-office clashes to date, the joint release of Lagaan and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha sparked off quite the frenzy. While Lagaan walked away with the accolades and the critical acclaim, as well as an Oscar nomination, it was Gadar that stole the show at the box-office with landmark footfall, which led to collections of Rs 75.5 crore, as opposed to Lagaan’s Rs 29 crore in earnings.
07/11‘Haider’ and ‘Bang Bang’
Both films belonged to diverse genres and catered to a diverse set of audience. ‘Haider’ was a hard-hitting drama whereas ‘Bang Bang’, was a masala action entertainer. ‘Bang Bang’ managed to enter the Rs 100 crore club. However, it is not considered to be a success due to the high cost of production. On the other hand, ‘Haider’, made on a much lesser budget, earned around Rs 60 crore and received high acclaim from the audience and critics alike.
08/11‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and ‘Son Of Sardar’
One of the most controversial Bollywood clashes as ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ was a tribute to the late filmmaker, Yash Chopra, as the film released after his demise and was his last directorial. On the other hand, Ajay Devgn, who is popular for clashing at the box office, denied the request of his competitors to change the date of his film’s release. Yet again both the films were a huge a financial success but when the battle for supremacy was over one film came out on top. Though both films were hits, 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' had the clear edge, with Rs 102 crore while 'Son of Sardaar' made Rs 88 crore.
09/11‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Saawariya’
Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ had the Shah Rukh factor attached to it while Ranbir Kapoor’s debut film didn’t do well at the box-office. But nonetheless, Ranbir was able to impress his critics and instantly gained a huge amount of female fan following. But according to success ratio ‘Saawariya’ couldn’t match up with ‘Om Shanti Om’. While ‘Om Shanti Om’ earned Rs 79.42 crore, ‘Saawariya’ managed a meager Rs 23.08 in comparison.
10/11‘Veer-Zaara’, ‘Aitraaz’ and ‘Naach’
Back in early 2000, when clashes were not so talked about things of B-town, witnessed three films releasing on the same date. ‘Veer-Zara’, featuring SRK and Preity Zinta in the lead, was a phenomenal success worldwide whereas ‘Aitraaz’ and ‘Naach’ didn’t earn as per the expectations of others. Love saga ‘Veer-Zaara’ was the highest grosser of the year with Rs 40 crore in collections, as Shah Rukh and Preity Zinta had a sizzling chemistry on screen, both looked wonderful together, it was a treat for the eyes to see both of them romance on screen. Though Veer Zara’s success was anticipated ‘Aitraaz’ was a surprise hit.
